The fashion industry is known as one of the most polluting industries in the world.

It accounts for up to 10% of global carbon dioxide output—more than international flights and shipping combinedIn 2018, the emission from the fashion industry reached 2.1 million tons. In comparison the fashion industry emission of CO₂ equals the entire amount of CO₂ from Germany, France and Great Britain altogether. If nothing gets done, the CO₂ emission is expected to increase to 2,7 billion tons in 2030.*

The single biggest concern in the fashion industry is that there is too much clothing. Of the 100 billion garments produced each year, 92 million end up in landfills.

Moi Namaste's mission, therefore, is to give a new life to existing materials from block printed cotton to handloom weaves. In cases where we need to create new textiles for our future collections, we want to ensure minimal environment harm and promote circularity.

We believe there is no better logic than use fabrics that already exist. This is why we have minimised environmental pollution by only producing styles in already existing materials or sustainably certified materials. Furthermore, to offset our carbon footprint we have been growing our own Moi Namaste forest, managed in partnership with Ecologi.

As we move forward, we will continue to use existing fabrics (leftovers, dead stock, cut pieces, etc.) as well as work with master artisans to create handcrafted, exquisite textiles that are environmentally & socially sustainable.

From our 2021 report, some key findings included:

  • Moi Namaste has contributed to female empowerment, since female artisans can finally have an occupation and gain their own money.
  • The knowledge of artisans and the society they live in (even people who don’t work for the NGOs) improves, since the artisans share their learnings with others.
  • The living conditions of the next generation has been improved since artisans can use their salaries to guarantee an education for their children, and therefore allowing them to have better opportunities and quality of life.
  • By informing the customers about the different craftsmanship techniques and the history behind the products- the company spreads the knowledge of the Indian culture to their Finnish (and worldwide) customers.
